Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving. While offering those who served a free meal or scoop of ice cream may seem insignificant there are only a few ways that we can truly show our deepest appreciation. Stanley Homes, Premier Home Builder of Brevard & Volusia Counties would like to share with you a few other ways we can show gratitude to those who have risked their lives to protect ours.
Talk to them. As simple- minded as this may sound, almost every article we have read on the subject it is almost always the first suggestion. What are we afraid of? They are human beings, that yes, have had some extreme experiences, but at the end of the day they did it for people like you and me. So next time you see a Vet sitting in a diner sipping on some coffee, tell them “Thanks” and see where that leads you next. You could make a friend for life.
Don’t assume. They are not all battling PTSD now that they are home. If they are, PTSD does not necessarily mean that they have anger issues, violent behaviors, and depression. It may take some time for them to settle back into civilian life so before you go assuming the worse take that opportunity to see how you can help them readjust.
Support their families. As we know some of soldiers never come home. Some do. Either way their families are most often left with little resources, support groups and compassion. Random acts of kindness go a long way and with community slipping away slowly every passing year we have the chance to make a difference in everyone’s lives.
Donate. You can donate cars, household appliances, clothing, money, time and even jobs to Vets. Let’s help them get back on their feet. Show some appreciation. You can search the internet for local places to donate or volunteer your time. Get involved in your churches and community helping out in any way possible.
