Lighting is something we take for granted most of the year, until the days get shorter and we need to turn on more lights. During the holidays we tend to do more entertaining at home, so this month we wanted to share with you ways to enhance your home’s outdoor lighting for guests coming to visit your home.
Front Door Lighting & Holiday Decorations
Often the front door is the first thing people see when driving or walking by a house. For visitors who aren’t familiar with your home’s location, turning on a few lights and having a street number that’s easy to read (well lit) from the street is very helpful. Check your doorbell and house number lights to make sure they work as you might not notice problems because often the family enters the home through a different door.
It’s festive to put up holiday lights on your home’s exterior so if you’re not comfortable on a ladder, a few strands of lights to outline your front door is a great alternative. Alternatively if you’ve been wanting to replace the light fixture(s) by your front door, this might be the perfect time to “decorate your front door” in a way you’ll enjoy for years to come and showcase your new lighting fixtures.
We love decorating for the holidays and everyone has family customs to continue and pass along to your children. If you’re searching for something new, try a simple wreath made from twigs so you can change the ribbon to match the changing seasons. It will save you from having to store multiple wreaths when out of season, and you’ll save money too.
Walkways, Driveways & Other Lighting Opportunities
First and foremost when you have company is keeping everyone safe. That’s why it’s a good idea to light up the areas where guests will be walking as they enter and leave your home. With a long driveway, it’s common to have some type of lighting near garage doors and you can now purchase fixtures that are both motion activated and solar powered, which combined with new LED lighting, will minimize your maintenance chores.
Lighting up walkways and driveways are also fun for the holidays. There’s a lot of history behind todays modern luminaries which started as bonfires for people traveling during the holidays.
Our advice for buying new products to decorate and light up your home is to find items that you will use year round and choose products that are energy efficient like solar lights and reusable like a twig wreath you can redecorate for each season.
A good way to save time and make your holidays about people and creating great memories, is to give yourself a budget. Allow just one large storage box of exterior decorations with things that will only take you a few hours to put up and take down each year.
Wishing you a wonderful Holiday!
